and let me save you a whole lot of bother by telling you this straight up: there is no perfect person out there for you because there’s no perfect person out there for anyone. Even if you end up falling head over heels for someone and they do seem perfect at the time, when the love hormones wear off, there will be one or two areas where he won’t be flawless. And this is the other great failing of online dating: it discounts one very important, extremely powerful variable - chemistry.
Chemistry is what’s responsible when you meet some guy who is totally not your physical type and the complete opposite in personality to guys you normally get on with - but you don’t care.
I asked him not to tell me, but he couldn’t help dropping a few revelatory details about her career — I was surprised how little I “knew” about her from my hours of conversation, versus his minutes of Google work. Sometimes when I would meet up with her, I’d be waiting on a corner and keep thinking I’d seen her, and it would take a second to realize it wasn’t her.
An unforeseen consequence of ditching my smartphone for my brick-dumb Huawei is that I don’t have a camera on my phone. And then when I finally saw her, my memory would putter to life and go “oh yeah, THAT’S what she looks like.” I don’t want to sound all sappy or anything, but she was always better looking than I’d remembered.
I did okay at the small talk, even with the beautiful friend, and then she talked with this other guy, this really smart successful guy who I’d small talked with already, and I saw him take his phone out and hand it to her, and was sure that he was friending her on Facebook.
And so, as we left the bar, I asked for her number. I don’t have a well-formed rule set, or any record of success. And so I called her the next day, tactlessly, before successful guy could make what I assumed would be a series of well-calculated moves on Facebook.
It’s time efficient - simply go online in the comfort of your own home and view hundreds of potential partners on any number of dating websites catering for every possible taste.
And it’s convenient - you can narrow the search for a partner by listing what you will and won’t put up with.
This morning, I took a peek at the questions coming into my blog. This is more than TWICE the number of couples who met through bars, clubs, and other social events. That’s the sound of your preconceived notions being shattered. Now, to be fair, 38% of marriages came from work and school. So clearly that must mean that those are “better” ways of meeting… About 100% How many people are paying for online dating sites at a given time? What this illustrates is that, proportionally, 5% of the population (online daters) accounts for 17% of the marriages in the past 3 years. Go out for one night of drinks and appetizers with your girlfriends. There’s only been one girl in this year without the internet.I liked her “that way,” and she didn’t like me “that way,” and so that was that. Our original chance encounter was brought on by boredom.Chemistry alone won’t guarantee you a great relationship but if you have it, you’re streets ahead of the couple who don’t.By all means date online - it’s a highly effective and successful way to meet a partner.
